Nurse/actress allows deliver toddlers and musical performances

SHREWSBURY/GRAFTON – Laura Gulli, RN, a Shrewsbury indigenous now residing in Grafton, operates as a labor and shipping nurse even though also raising her youthful little ones. Pre-pandemic, she also usually shipped musical performances to audiences in her hometown and further than.

“I was executing a few to 4 reveals a calendar year,” she mentioned of her pre-pandemic schedule. “Something that I’m missing so immensely proper now is my involvement in theater. It balances who I am. It will make me a greater mother, a better human being.” 

Song-and-dance entertainer

Gulli personifies the showbiz term “triple risk,” an entertainer who excels in acting, singing and dancing.

As a self-described shy baby, she started out performing in elementary university performs and subsequently began researching dance. Though attending Shrewsbury High Faculty (SHS), her singing ability was recognized by Bonnie Narcisi, the now-retired district director of music and drama.

“Bonnie encouraged me to audition for her a cappella group, which opened up doors for me in musicals,” Gulli relayed. “I appreciated possessing the 3 avenues exactly where I could examine acting, singing and dancing. It built perception that I could do musical theater.”

Immersed in the arts

Soon after graduating from SHS in 2001, Gulli attended the American Musical and Extraordinary Academy in New York Town.

“It was fully efficiency pushed,” she explained of the curriculum. “I loved becoming immersed in the arts from early morning to evening.”

Even though Gulli achieved some achievement doing the job in New York theaters, she in the long run moved back again to Shrewsbury several decades later on.

“I gave up on myself a minor too swiftly,” she acknowledged. “I didn’t have the thick skin that I come to feel like I have nowadays. I’ve toughened up quite a bit.” 

Identifying a different passion

Shortly afterward, Gulli discovered a different passion. She acquired a nursing license at Becker School in 2008. Now, she’s a labor and shipping and delivery nurse at Saint Vincent Clinic in Worcester.

“I chose labor and supply due to the fact I was a younger mom at 23,” she stated. “I like moms and infants, so it’s a superior in shape for me.”

In addition, she appreciates her co-employees.

“I adore my get the job done loved ones,” she declared. “I love operating with these clever girls and aiding other gals carry new daily life into the world.”

Shrewsbury phase comeback

Just after only a transient hiatus, Gulli returned to the stage. Her mentor, Bonnie Narcisi, was among the the founders of the Shrewsbury-based mostly Regatta Players. Gulli performed in Regatta’s 2010 inaugural manufacturing, “Baby.” 

“It was interesting to be part of a new theater team in Shrewsbury,” she recalled.

Later on, when Regatta presented “Young Frankenstein” in 2018, Gulli merged her theatrical and maternal instincts.

“I was 7 months expecting, and I did a tap dance variety in a comprehensive tux,” she recounted. “The dancing was truly quick the obstacle was having into the costume. My castmates helped me place on my tap sneakers simply because I practically could not get to my toes at that issue.”

Would this labor and supply nurse advise her people to tap dance?

“Sure, go for it!” she exclaimed. “You only reside the moment.”

Throughout 10 a long time, Gulli appeared in most of Regatta’s musicals, such as its very last, 2019’s “Dirty Rotten Scoundrels.” Pandemic limitations canceled Regatta’s 2020 present and in the end closed the theater group.

Camaraderie in local community theaters

Gulli has worked alongside some Regatta alumni at other neighborhood theaters.

Her resume also involves shows at Barre Players Theater, Stageloft Repertory Theater in Sturbridge, Sterling Group Theater and Vanilla Box Productions in Worcester.

She’s looking forward to after again sharing levels with her performing buddies.

“I can not wait to see my theater good friends all over again,” she observed. “When we get back to some normalcy, I won’t ever take it for granted.”
